Babies, Kids and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care was once thought of as a treatment plan solely for adults. That is no longer the case. More and more parents are turning to chiropractic care instead of, or in combination with, traditional medical treatment for their children.

During the birthing process, especially after a cesarean, a baby's body undergoes enormous physical stress/strain caused by the pulling and twisting motions on the infant during delivery. This can cause subluxation and central nervous system interference. If the subluxation is not caught in time, irreversible damage such as subluxation degeneration changes can occur. Subluxation can also occur while the child is still in the womb. It has also been proven that the daily routine of active children (running, jumping, climbing etc.) can also cause subluxations.

Giving children regular check ups and alignments can possibly prevent future injuries, boost their immune system, and affords them numerous health benefits that are non-invasive and drug free. Parents do need to watch for any signs of possible issues such as hyperactivity, stomach pain, fever, bed wetting, sore throat, colds, flu and poor posture. Some of the more serious conditions that chiropractic care can be beneficial are cerebral palsy, epilepsy, ADHD, allergies, and Tourette's Syndrome. All these symptoms and more can be treated effectively (lessen or eliminate symptoms) by chiropractic care.

The key to optimal health in children is to find a chiropractor that specializes in pediatric chiropractic care. The practitioner must be well versed in prenatal treatment all the way up to children who are 18 years of age. Because a child is constantly growing, their physical make-up needs special care. There can be lifelong injuries and/or health conditions if they are adjusted by a chiropractor that is not highly skilled and experienced in treating children.

There are several techniques and precautionary measures that are practiced while treating children. First on the list is a thorough spinal evaluation by the chiropractor. Pediatric chiropractic specialists are trained to spot spinal problems in children of all ages. Unlike adults, spinal adjustments are performed using (pain-free) light fingertip techniques to straighten out any malfunctions or improve their spinal structure. This fingertip technique uses only one pound (or less) of pressure. Aligning children and infants is very delicate and sensitive procedure. This is why it is imperative that the chiropractor adjusting your child is highly educated, skilled, and experienced with pediatric chiropractic care.

What should your child expect at his/her visit? Even though the process is pain-free, it is still a little intimidating and frightening since they do not know what to expect. A great number of children cry the first time due to the process being completely foreign to them. They will hear "popping" sounds when their joints are moved. This is just the air bubbles within the joints being released when the joint is properly aligned. After the initial treatment, they will need fewer visits and the corrections will be much easier because their spine is more mobile/flexible than an adult.

Subsequent visits, depending on the physical condition/disorder of the child, will be determined according to the progress that is made during each session. A typical treatment plan is to have sessions anywhere from 6 to 12 times per year, along with a periodic re-evaluation to determine if the treatments are working and if any changes need to be made to the child's treatment plan. During the re-evaluation, the practitioner can then decide if other forms of therapy (physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc.) are necessary for the child to reach optimal health. If it seems that none of these forms of therapy are working, or progress is too slow, the chiropractor may refer the child to a specialist for future care.

As a parent, you want your child to begin his/her life with optimal health and well-being. The way to accomplish that goal is to get him/her to a highly skilled, educated, and experienced pediatric chiropractor as soon after delivery as possible. By maintaining proper alignment throughout their childhood, you will be preventing (or lessening the symptoms of) numerous childhood illnesses and conditions. This is the perfect way to get your precious little one on the path to a healthier and happier life.
